The summer is slowly but surely coming to an end and for most that means it's "Back to School" time! Whether your child is off to their first day at day care, elementary, middle school, high school or even college, they are among those students experiencing a different kind of "Back to School" year. It's a virtual learning kind of world for many students! I'm sure some parents with school aged children may be having a difficult time adjusting to such a drastic change! Kids are at home all day, trying to adjust to their new normal, and some parents are working remotely as well, so you may as well say, it's a bit of a challenge for the entire household.
As a mom, I can totally relate. My son just started 6th grade. I can't believe I have a middle schooler and if you would have told me 11 years ago that he would be starting this milestone year while being home schooled, not solely by choice, but due to a global pandemic, I would not have believed you.
I will admit, at first, I felt some kind of way knowing that he'd be starting his 6th grade school year from home. I couldn't help but to think how he would miss out on his first initial experience of walking into a new school -- middle school that is, meeting new friends, and checking his schedule throughout the day trying to map out exactly where the classrooms would be located, roaming the halls of a school double the size of his elementary school.
Then, I had to immediately think of his safety, and the safety of the other students and the faculty during this time. He'd definitely be safer from the comfort of his own home and that put my mind at ease and I was prepared to help him focus on having a stress free, yet successful school year.
After all, we were both new to this change. Although I'm working from home, I still have to make sure that he sticks to his schedule, that means logging in on time, participating in discussions as he should, turning in assignments as needed and sticking to the activities, homework and quizes thoughout the week.
It is definitely something to get use to. In addition, I knew I had to make sure that he was set up at home in a "ready to learn" environment. So, I picked a location in our home and tried to make it as "classroom cozy" as I could. I created a location that I believe will allow him to thrive just as he would if he were at school!
Check out what I call our "Cozy Classroom Virtual Set Up" at home!
